NatWest Group plc was formerly known as The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc. Until the collapse of 2008 and the general financial crisis, this group of companies held the position of the largest bank in the world, the second-largest bank in the UK and Europe, and the fifth-largest in the world by market capitalization. Subsequently, the bank plummeted in the rating due to a sharp drop in the share price and a serious loss of confidence. The UK government bailed them out as part of a 2008 rescue package for UK banks.
As of May 2021, the government owns and operates 54.8% of NWG.L through UK government investment.
NatWest Group plc provides a wide range of banking products, from services for individuals to insurance and corporate finance. Its main subsidiaries are National Westminster Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland, Ulster Bank, NatWest Markets and Coutts. The group issues banknotes in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
